SPRR Fans, Mark Your Calendars!!!
The Southern Pacific Railroad History Center (splives.org) recently announced its May 2023 meeting with partners Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society and the National Railroad Historical Society. The joint meeting will be held in Sparks, Nevada at the newly refurbished Nuggett Casino directly adjacent to the former SP Overland Route mainline. The major highlight of the event is a two and a half day series of panels and presentations focusing on the last twenty-five years of the Southern Pacific. Eighteen speakers will talk about the major issues SP faced and responded to, four panels will provide retrospective reviews of the last years, and other former SP officers will examine the creation of SP's late developing Marketing Department. Many other topics will be explored including the ever congested Houston area and the unprecedented growth of intermodal on the SP and how it was handled. Mike Mohan will kick off the meeting. Rob Krebs has committed to serve as a panel member and Rollin Bredenberg will be the keynote speaker at the event. In addition, the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway and Historical Society will be hosting tours and steam train rides at the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City and at the Wester Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California. An informal time to "Meet and Greet Former SP Officials Up Close and Personal" will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to mingle with many of the folks who were involved with Southern Pacific right up to the end.
This will be a one of a kind joint event and it's recommended folks sign up early as the "Meet and Greet Former SP Officials Up Close and Personal" event will have limited seating, as will some of the other planned side trips.
