Railroaders' Nostalgia > Derailment Near the SP4449 at West Oakland in 1977Date: 12/27/22 12:42 Derailment Near the SP4449 at West Oakland in 1977 Author: Westbound Wharfrat's comment about a derailment 2 threads below got me to thinking. Although I cannot recall any derailment involving the SP 4449 we did have one nearby not involving the steam engine itself. In a 1977 visit to Oakland, CA, the 4449 was setting and being serviced near the old Diesel shop. The SSW 9296 and another locomotive were pulling out a UP caboose, moving on a curved track designed for an 0-6-0 when its rear truck derailed. In the 2nd photo, the engineer has given up all hope of a quick re-railing and is heading out the cab door for a new set of engines nearby.
