UP 844 and UP 3985 departing Winnmeuccca (Rose Creek actually) in May of 1999. Destination was the California State Railroad Museuem via a stop over in Sparks.

And experienced the scary episode when the diesel crapped out in the tunnel!! I was listening on the scanner.

Yes! Definitely NOT fun. Even with the all-weather cab all closed up, it was VERY loud, and VERY, VERY hot. Must have gotten over 200 degrees. Luckily, we all had the air-hoods on for breathing "fresh air".

Can you explain the experience for those of us who have never been a steam locomotive cab?

Pretty sure that I have "written this up" previously for a magazine, but "VERY hot and VERY loud" inside a tunnel/snow shed, pretty well sums it up.
