Eastern Railroad Discussion > CSX at Mount Holly, NCDate: 02/25/01 07:47 CSX at Mount Holly, NC Author: KNTower Mount Holly, NC is where CSX's Terrell Subdivision diverges from and crosses the Charlotte Subdivision mainline.
The Terrell Sub allows CSX to move coal to power plants at Terrell and River Bend, NC. The plant at Terrell is Duke Power's Marshall Steam Plant, which is also served by Norfolk Southern via its branch from Catawba, NC on the Salisbury-Asheville "S Line." Currently, the line to the power plants (a former Piedmont & Northern line) diverges to the right of the mainline for northbound coal trains from Bostic. This line to the right then splits again, with the straight route continuing north toward CSX's Pinoca Yard in Charlotte and the diverging route leading to the power plants. The straight route (also the former P&N) wanders away from the Charlotte Subdivision mainline but parallels it and is currently referred to as the Mount Holly Siding. The route to the power plants is the Terrell Subdivision and curves back to the left, crossing the Charlotte Subdivision mainline at grade in the Mount Holly DTC Block. Grading has begun for a new connection and bridge over parallel Highway 27. With this change, the route for coal trains to the Terrell Sub will diverge to the left instead of to the right, eliminating the diamond on the Terrell and Charlotte Subdivisions. On February 24, 2001, we observed the following trains in the Mount Holly area: 304PM Duke Siding - CSX U316 south (Engines 380-375). 89 empty DJLX aluminum tubs. 320PM Mount Holly - CSX U344 north (Engines 260-73-FURX3028). 100 loaded SCWX aluminum hoppers. 421PM Mount Holly - CSX T466 north (Engines 446-441). 72 loaded hoppers. 455PM Mt Holly - CSX V351 south (Engines 308-221-8579). Empty tubs and hoppers from the Terrell Subdivision. Train included CSXT 385397 ("C&O Summer Spike" car). The following posts will show the V351 coming off the Terrell Subdivision onto the Charlotte Subdivision. Date: 02/25/01 07:55 V351 at Mount Holly Author: KNTower This view shows V351's empties crossing the Charlotte Sub and entering the Charlotte Sub main track. Both this view and the previous one show some of the grading work being done to eliminate this interesting configuration.

The diamond in your previous photo is right behind me and to the right. THere are some great photo locations on this line. Also caught some meets at Duke Siding that same day.
