Ex-CNJ SD40s
Author: OCtrainguy

I was wondering if any of the eight ex-CNJ SD40s are still in use? I know Conrail rebuilt several of them into SD40-2s and were used in helper service. Did any of them make it into NS/CSX? If not, does anyone know what happened to them? Thanks for your help.

I can't help you with the dispositions of these units, however, here's the 3061 until someone can.

C&O bought 20 SD40's in 1967 and 8 of them including the #3061 that Andy took, was on long termlease in 1968 to the CNJ which carried the numbers 3061 through 3069. this info from the book Blue Diesels and Black Diamonds. (Tom Biery)and I do believe these were rebuilt to the Dash 2 standards. I believe CSX has got them back from the CNJ probably during the Chessie days ao the Family line days. I hope this helps you some what.

OC-I can tell you where 3 of them are. They are now First Union Rail Lease units:
FURX 3039,ex CNJ 3061
FURX 3040,ex CNJ 3065
FURX 3041,ex CNJ 3068
CSX has them right now,and they are common on the ex B&O here in Ohio -kind of a "comming home" thing as these are ex B&O.I've tossed in a scan of the only CNJ SD-40 to get the Coast Guard treatment after Conrail had renumbered it.It's shown backing up to it's train after pushing the train ahead up Tallmadge hill on the ex EL between Akron and Kent,March of 1977.It is the ex CNJ 3067.Tried the "instant fix" feature in Photoshop just to see how it worked, not sure I like the result.Anyway, hope this helps a bit.RAD.And PS:nikonman(Andy),check your mail-thanks.

Any of the ex-CNJ units that were rebuilt to Dash-2 specs as part of the program at Juniata during the early 1990s are still in service, as far as I know. I don't think any were wrecked (they were mostly in yard and transfer service for Conrail) and there have been no SD40-2 retirements.

One interesting note about those rebuilds is that they were all painted into straight can-opener livery, with the "Quality," even though "Conrail Quality" had been around for a couple of years by then. They probably were the last units painted into the original Conrail scheme (without the Q). Conrail people explained that the rebuilt units didn't necessarily meet the specs for "Conrail Quality." Yet they've outlasted a bunch of unrebuilt power that got the Quality treatment, but has since been retired -- including a single U23C that lasted just a month or two in its fresh CQ paint before being sent to the scrapper.

Ok, I stand corrected, Conrail still had them when they went to CSX. I was not sure about that my self.

I should clarify that the note "to MILW-40" does not refer to an active locomotive, just a spray painted number on the hulk.

Wrecked at Delaware Water Gap, which is near East Stroudsburg. EL didn't go near Slatington. LV and CNJ did.

Wasn`t there an EL SDP45 that went for a swim in that mess? Later became the WLE 9920?

Yes, the 3637 was the 3rd unit. CNJ 3069 was the middle unit. CNJ 3068 was the lead unit and was the only unit to make it across the washout.

BTW, Bill,

I have CR 6286 becoming HLCX 5035. How can a unit substitute for itself? Do you have other data on a HLCX 5035 history? I do show 5035 as actually existing, so its not a (HLCX 5035) situation.

Thoughts?

It was the 3637 that went down the embankment that night and was rebuilt into a slug but unsure of the number

I just *knew* that was coming since this conflict has been floating around for years, and am so prepared ........ This actually stems from a report on HLCX 6067 which was to be rebuilt from HLCX 5035 and was not.

HLCX 5035 is ex CR 801/0801 exx CR 6242 nee PC 6242
HLCX 6067 is ex CR 6286 exx CNJ 3062 nee B&O 7483

What happened is that CR 6286 was substituted for CR 801 in the "6000-program" and CR 801 (x6242) thus became HLCX 5035. This has been verfied several times with frame checks. Last word on HLCX 5035 is that it is still in CR blue and sitting at Alstom in Montreal.

If memory serves me correctly, the 3637 was rebuilt into an N&W slug. Maybe #9920? ChrisA. wrote:
