It is used to power the gel train on the Reading side of the Center City Commuter tunnel during slippery leaf season.

The Gel Train is a contraption that goes out at night to put a toothpaste-like gel on the rails to keep trains from slipping in and out of stations. Bear in mind that SEPTA's MU's are not equipped with sand. Their push-pull equipment do have sanders, although they are rarely, if ever, filled. second its not powering the gel train as its only a cabcar and when it was LIRR housed a HEP unit to power the lirr train. this is now a gel/cabcar as the hep was removed and a gel tank installed. it has to be run with a locomotive for power.
