W&LE Highhoods
Author: Poker2662

The W&LE GP35 and GP35-3 highhoods are some of the most distinctive locomotives in Eastern Ohio. The recognizable Southern-style look of a tall front hood with a bell on top and Alco trucks can commonly be seen in the Brewster/Canton area every day working local trains, while the larger six axle units work the road trains. There are currently twelve highhoods on the roster: 100, 102-108, 110, 200, 2662, and the 2695 which is the only GP35 not yet rebuilt to -3 specifications, while 109 and 112 had the highhood removed when they were rebuilt. Most are in the standard W&LE black and orange paint scheme, while some are in experimental and commemorative schemes as shown in the following six pictures.

1) W&LE 102 and 106 with train 271 cross Georgetown Road at Republic Steel near Canton, Ohio, on April 14th, 2015.
2) W&LE 2695, still in the original patched NS/SOU scheme of the W&LE 90's startup, works with the 103 in Brewster yard on April 24th, 2015. The unit sat in Brewster inactive from 2008 to 2013 after a few issues, but was brought back into service when traffic picked up.
3) W&LE 103 pulls a short local train east at Riverland Road northwest of Bolivar on May 2nd, 2015. This was the 624 local, which works multiple businesses in the Brewster area, with a plastic pellet hoppercar for Winter's Spur in Bolivar, loaded sandcars for Neomodal in Navarre, and a loaded lumbercar for a company in Orrville.

Three more...

4) W&LE 200 and 103 pull train 262 south through Canton on May 14th, 2015. The 200 was painted in this scheme for Ohio's 200th anniversary in 2003.
5) W&LE 106 and 100 are working in remote at the middle ladder of Brewster yard on May 19th, 2015.
6) W&LE 2662 and 200 pull a single hoppercar for Winter's Spur east the MPK142.6 "Rocket" defect detector northwest of Bolivar on June 13th, 2015. The 2662 was one of two engines painted in the red/yellow "Kodachrome" experimental scheme in 1992, but clearly the company leaned more toward a Rio Grande inspired scheme instead. The other kodachrome unit, 2679, was rebuilt to -3 specs, had its highhood chopped, and was renumbered to 112 in 2010.

Other highood engines not covered in the photos are the 104 & 105 in the standard black and orange scheme, the 107 in black and orange but with "AC&Y" letering on the side, the 108 in the same scheme as the 2695 but rebuilt to -3 specs, and the 110 in an odd scheme with an orange frame and numbers but with no nose striping and a single coat of black paint applied wiht rollers.

Thanks for looking.
Matt.

Some on the Southern called these units "sledrunners" in refence to the shape of the equalizer bar on the trucks that were from trade-in Alcos.
