(New) NS 1800 - go bananas
Author: RAILOH

From the web:

The latest in Norfolk Southern’s DC to AC conversion program is SD70ACC 1800, seen here fresh out of the Juniata Paint Shop in Altoona, PA. Original built in 9/1994 as EMD SD70 #2537, 1800 was rebuilt by Progress Rail’s facility in Muncie, Indiana, to include a new safety cab and electrical upgrades to provide AC traction. The yellow color represents Progress Rail’s parent company, Caterpillar. The unit will work in revenue service across the NS system. Photo by Casey Thomason. The yellow looks a little pale; is that accurate for Caterpillar's yellow?  Either way, I can't wait to see this one out on the road.  Looks good to me, too.

I like it too.  Shoulda made the gray part black and kept it in the Pittsburgh area...

I would have liked it a LOT better if the whole unit was yellow.  Crazy as it might sound, I would like to see what it would look like if you replaced the gray with the standard NS blck.

It's a Santa Fe "yellowbonnet" with an inverted curve, I like it.

Maybe a slightly faded version of the old Cat yellow.

I don't know how a lot of others feel but I love what NS is doing with all the different paint schemes on different locomotives.. I wish I lived closer to the Norfolk Southern mainline.

I wonder if NS will continue to delve into the Crayola box for the other SD70 ACC conversions.  I hope they do! Can't wait for the jolly green giant or the purple dinosaur or the grape ape!

Just out of curiosity, how much is NS paying for each of these rebuilds? I'm assuming it's way cheaper than buying a new engine, but I'm just curious.

As much as I pissed and moaned about losing the standard cab SD70s, this is a damn fine looking locomotive with that new cab! I like it MUCH better than the standard SD70Ace cab! Although I'm sure they'll keep this unit in house for awhile due to testing, I hope you guys back east really nail this one out on the road mixed with other power!

The full tear drop windows up front certainly do make the cab look nice.

Would anyone be able to explain the (rusty) wheels, if that’s the case, and if so, why they wouldn’t be replaced for something more appealing in a new paint scheme and official photo.

My Dad, in his 70s, noticed & asked. I don’t know the dynamics in how much wear they’d need to be in to determine replacement. I suppose it may be cosmetic, much like the coupler.

Thanks.
