NS Derailment Near Hannibal MO Auto Racks -Crushed!!
Author: Chopperbill

16 Miles west of Hannibal Mo   near town of Huntington,  MO.   This afternoon ??

Looks like about 18 + -  auto racks with brand New Auto's on board.  Not good situation.

No fires.  No other info.   Anyone else have a report?   Train ID   etc?

Going to have to cut down lot of trees to access the site for clean up.  Landowners will be interested in access ($$) to NS.

Looks like plenty of wrecked Ford trucks

Amazing that that the signal wasn't "knocked down", literally. I guess this won't help Ford's dealing with the chip shortage that has reduced new truck availability. I am sure happy I took delivery of a new Ford Ranger a couple months ago. Best truck I've owned in 35 years or more. Reality is I work in the military and NASA communication field, the chip shortage is killing our business, it's not just cars and trucks.

The derailment took out the siding switch, both mainline signals and the signal bungalow.

The train (148) derailed in 2 places 50+ cars all together. Quite the mess. The crew was uninjured.

Maybe they'll try to salvage the chips and use them in other new trucks? <G>

According to Heritageunits.com, NS 148 leader was the Conrail heritage unit, NS 8098.

I had a 98 Ranger for just under 10 years, traded it in when my daughter was on the way. Still miss that truck!

As for the semiconductor shortage, it is hitting everyone, especially the electrical industry where I work.

I can see it either way. NS gets talked about more on the Eastern Board but the accident happened west of the Mississippi

My experience with the previous generation of Rangers is that they were horribly unfortable to drive.  By comparison, the S10's I've owned and driven were like sitting in a good recliner.  The Rangers always felt like a straight jacket to me.  My best friend would often borrow his Dad's Ranger and said the exact same thing.

Old Wabash searchlight signal missed being wiped out by the derailment but likely destined to be replaced with the other signal casulties when the mess is cleaned up.

How many cars were on this train?  Were any DPUs in operation at the time of the derailment?

Again, how many car were in this train?  How many engineer starts would this mess pay for?  When will this management team wake up?

My understanding is that all the vehicles on the autoracks that derailed will be scrapped, even ones that appear unimpacted. Railroads don't want the liability that could occur if they were offered for sale and one crashes injuring occupants. Some shyster lawyer would file a claim that it had been damaged in a train wreck and the railroad has to pay for all subsequent human injuries and property damage.
