Where were the 50 derailed cars positioned in the 150 car train?
What is the eastbound grade through E Palestine?
Train speed?
Was the "mechanical defect" a burnt off journal or dragging equipment?
How far did the initial car travel on the ground before the pile-up?
Was there a secondary derailment due to run-in?

NTSB reported authorized track speed as 45 mph

So i can't blame it on PSR, but my opinion is that PSR made the derailment worse.

Does anyone know where the previous dragger is? How many miles before the dragger that alerted the crew to a problem.

The NTSB held a press conference yesterday and posted drone video.  It's all on the NTSB Youtube channel.

At the press conference. it was mentioned that a defect detector went off just before the train went into emergency.  They did not go into specifics.  The drone video shows several cars of the train on the tracks.  I believe that is the front because the crew reportedly decoupled the engines and moved to safety, and because there was no FRED on the car.  The end of the train is derailed and burned.  Event recorder data, camera video, and audio has been obtained from the lead locomotive.  They inspected track a safe distance from the fire and determined where it first derailed.

The NTSB stated there would be no more press conferences until the preliminary report is released, in a few weeks.

Milepost 69 in Sebring was the previous Hotbox detector location. East Palestine is a detector location itself (MP 49) and the next one is at MP 30 in Beaver Falls. The 20 mile spacing seems pretty standard and it is not unnown, although very rare, for a hotbx to cause a derailment between one detector and the next.

It is extremely rare, especially with today's roller bearing technology. However, when a bearing goes bad, it can happen very fast.

I don't know when there's been a more stunning image capture of just what caused a derailment.   Gets rid of a lot of speculation.

The NTSB will be deep-diving on everything to do with that car - parts, inspection, maintenance records, you name it.    The names of the guys that mined the coal that made the steel for the bearings.... joking, of course, but they eat Root Cause Analysis for breakfast every morning.    The only problem with the NTSB is that they take so long that you forget about the accident and they don't say much until they are done...done.   And remember in any kind of legal proceeding, their findings are not admissible. 

Authorities are planning to place shaped-explosive charges on the remaining vinyl chloride cars still in danger of exploding. They have evacuated an extensive area in East Palestine and west PA. Explosions scheduled begining at. 3:30 EST. Live coverage at this link:

I agree. I’m thinking more of a broken wheel caused derailment.

The mileposts go up westbound. The next Defect detector going west of East Palestine should be at 60.8? I haven't been in the area for several years since they have removed the PRR signals and the way NS runs things. There should be a defect detector in New Galliee at 40.0 unless it was removed. Also a detector at 69.8 between Murph and Alliance. 60.8 at Columbiana? Is in between Murph and Lum. So unless the wheel began burning right after it passed the Columbiana detector, Nothing could be done..

Unless something changed recently, the Columbiana detector is a dragger only, no hotbox.
