A tribute to one of my all time favorite paint schemes (D&H)
Author: EL833

I've been waiting for 1) NS to fix the issue with their newest Heritage tribute, the "D&H" 1080, and 2) waiting for it to lead through my area. All that came together yesterday, 07-29-2025 when it lead train 171 west out of Conway, Pa. The D&H only had 3 six axle EMD locomotives, and the only time I saw them they were in patched EL paint, so I've substituted a GE six axle to illustrate the original look. NS did a great job on this one.

At the crew change location in Mansfield, Ohio.
D&H 755 at Otego, NY on MB-2 on 05-25-1980.
First decent photo of the chase was passing the former PRR Orrville tower at Orrville, Oh.

....more to come

Mansfield. I gave up the chase after Mansfield, it had been a long hot day on the heels of a long hot day on Monday catching the laker "Cuyahoga" departing Ashtabula, Ohio for the breakers (scrap tow). I'm in a holding pattern, waiting for a kidney transplant, so the energy levels are limited lol.

Sad to see a classic laker going to scrap. Here's a good summary: https://boatnerd.com/boatnerd-news-july-29-2025-xtra-the-cuyahoga/

Cuyahoga's sister ship Michipicoten sprung a leak last year and its future is uncertain. https://www.randlog.com/michipicoten/

Sorry to hear about your kidney troubles. On the bright side, it seems that kidney transplants are usually successful. Hope a match appears soon!

Very nice look at the D&H. I count myself fortunate to actually seeing D&H helpers on Mount Ararat, PA, cutting off after pushing a train up from Lanesboro. Then the "chase" of the southbound freight to Carbondale. Traffic after that prevented keeping up. Not fortunate to have decent camera gear but it was a sight to remember, long ago and faraway!
Thanks!

Nice images from a productive chase! Definitely like that D&H paint scheme, too.

That was one heck of a successful chase you had there Roger !  I was on that much earlier D&H chase with you and Mark Perri. It was the MB-2 (Mechanicville-Binghamton). We chased it from Richmondville until it's after dark arrival in Binghamton. Being a fellow Boatnerd I'm also glad you got some last shots of the Cuyahoga.  I shot it in layup at Toledo,OH. back on 3/28/92 as the J. Burton Ayers of the Columbia Transportation fleet. Most people thought she might never sail again, but she was bought by Lower Lakes Towing and renamed the Cuyahoga. I shot her fleet flag along with the "Don't Give Up The Ship" flag  at Port Colborne,ON. back on 6/20/98. Bottom shot of the Cuyahoga upbound on the St. Clair River under the Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia,ON. on 9/1/2002. At 82 years old, I guess she had a good run ! Also wishing you the best with your kidney transplant. Take Care   ROD

Agree, was, and now still is, an excellent paint scheme.

Awesome stuff Roger - you really bagged it!  Hope it comes our way (Cresson PA) in the next few days.

Best wishes on the impending procedure - hope you're not sidelined for too long!

You really went all out with these excellent views !!!
Image #2 at Otego was taken about 500 feet north of where I resided when last living in NY before retirement.

I wish I could have gotten out to see the Cuyahoga. I guess I wasn't sure just what was going one or how to do it.

Good luck with your upcoming procedure.

Thanks for posting.  It seems ironic that the tribute engine is an EMD and the D&H fleet was almost 100% Alcos.

Good luck with your kidney proceedure  Rober.  I'll look forward to more of your posts when it's successfully completed.

Thanks ! IIRC, train 171 goes to Chattanooga, so it may be a bit before it passes through Cresson.
