First, the non-controversial stuff.  Aberdeen Carolina & Western ran an extra from shop in Candor NC down to the Passenger Car Tracks in Pinehurst NC today, Thursday 7/2/26.  View is passing my house at 1020 AM, about a mile from it's destination.  Train was powered by SD60M 5512, had the twin-dinner set that was returning to Pinehurst after receiving some minor plumbing work in shop, debuting the former UP RPO that has just emerged from shop and is joining the fleet this weekend, and returning the set of F's which had been in for 92 day inspection and other minor work.   Here is a before, during, and after shot of the RPO

To return to our regularly scheduled programming, here is a routine freight passing the house today - this is today's inbound cut from CSXT and is fairly typical, maybe a little light, of the car load traffic they do with CSXT.  Running slow on heat slow order as its 100+ out there!

Cool passenger train! But add it to the list of dollar store 250 units. That motor looks like an abandoned high school locker that got spray painted yellow and then sticker-bombed. Some of the railroads have put out some stunning, creative and high quality 250 schemes, but most should've been avoided. Thanks for sharing videos of the move. 

Thank you for sharing these photos and all of the ACWR updates. I have a few questions, that will help me update my roster of surviving UP passenger cars. Where was this car located before it arrived at the ACWR shop? Was this part of a museum collection? Is the Union Pacific number known?

Do not know - I only know (or suspect) it was UP from the truck castings (assuming they are original to car).  It arrived on property about the same time as dozens  of other cars from the Iowa Pacific and Indiana Transportation Museum's fire sales, so my assumption is it came from one of them, and since I am not aware of Indiana having any UP cars, my guess is it came from Iowa Pacific.

All-around great railroad, but man that thing is hideous!  However, the F-units look sweet in their plum purple!

hideous is too nice of a word for that electric green. my god.  maybe if they painted the front in red or blue?  the graphics on the die leave a lot to be desired.  hopefully they'll take all that nonsense off in august.  they get my vote for worst 250th scheme .....so far.

5520 ran down to Aberdeen and turned around on the wye.  The RPO and twin dinner where switched into the dinner train consist while all the power and kitchen car joined the Engine Room 87 complex to form a parade float looking train for Saturday.  Engine Room 87 will be open to public until 6pm I believe on Saturday, at which time it will reopen to ticket passenger for a mobile bar party and fireworks viewing train.  Here are a couple of shots of the fireworks train, plus another shot of the RPO now in the dinner train consist.

This proves you can take lots of LSD and paint locomotives at the same time...

Apparently this was deaccessioned by the Stuhr Museum in Nebraska back around 2002 if that helps you narrow it down.

I'll say.  It's almost as hideous as the Genesee & Wyoming orange

Perhaps the 5520 is also a tribute to South of the Border?

I tried to like this paint scheme, I really did! But as other posters have said, it's horrible as a 250th birthday tribute scheme! This paint scheme makes the CSX heritage paint jobs look good! If the lime green and yellow was replaced with, I dunno, maybe red, white and blue, I could probably like it!

The "RPO" car in the photos is a former UP Baggage Passenger car. Built in 1912 as UP Mail & Passenger "RPO" 1402; renumbered in 1915 to UP 2512; the mail section was removed in 1943 and the space converted to coach seats, which is when the car became what UP called a Baggage Passenger. UP retired the car in June 1965, and in June 1967 donated it to the Stuhr Museum of the Pioneer in Grand Island, Nebraska. It remained there until sold in February 2023, along with Pullman heavyweight sleeper "Lake Ctrystal" to the Aberdeen Carolina & Western; both cars moved by truck to AC&W at Candor, North Carolina, in March 2024. The Lake Crystal is awaiting refurbishment by the talented AC&W crew, to match the great job they did on the former UP 2512.

Talking about something you can't "unsee"...
If I lived there I would plant a lot more trees between my house and the tracks.  Maybe a proper English hedge.  Or a tall wall, covered in ivy.  Probably all three, just to be safe.
