Eastern Railroad Discussion > How many steam engines are operating?Date: 01/31/06 15:10 How many steam engines are operating? Author: jch9596 I just need a rough guestimate of how many steam engines are running in America currently at tourist operations, etc. My definition of "current" means now or *will* run this summer. I work at a news station as a photog and I'm trying to convince the boss to send me600 miles north on a steam engine story and he likes rarities and oddities. Any help is much appreciated.

Of those I would say about 12 would be "event engines", or large(r) engines that are not regularily scheduled and available only a few times per year. BTW -looking forward to that May issue. Now let's see if my place of employment will really send me 650 miles one way to cover a railroad story!!!
