Go to downtown Ft Lauderdale. There is a drawbridge there that warns of impending trains. Nice area too - lots of restaurants etc.

Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk area is great for the Florida
East Coast trains, best in the evening.
CSX/Tri-Rail/Amtrak line is to the west near I-95. The
station platform at Fort Lauderdale is not too bad
although I do not recommend this for photography. This
line has two Amtrak trains and 15 weekday commuter trains
each way plus the CSX Fort Lauderdale local job puttering
around. CSX only runs a couple of through freight trains
each way and they generally run at night. There is a lot
of work currently taking place on this line so there may
be a long break especially on weekends when occasionally
bus service is substituted for the commuter trains
through the work areas.
Tri-Rail fares especially on weekends are quite
reasonable and if you want to travel a little, Deerfield
Beach is a decent place to watch and/or photograph these
trains and it has a nice Amtrak Station too. No major
construction in the Deerfield Beach area.
Hollywood on the Tri-Rail route has construction around
the passenger station and I do not recommend it for train
watching.
