Another question for everyone.
Author: BaltoJoey

Seeing the photos in the thread below made me curious. I wonder how many abandoned railroad bridges there are in the contiguous United States?

Hundreds, if not thousands, if you count all the little ones on various lines that have been shut down and the structures weren't worth salvaging.

Sometimes the supporting structures underneath remain long after the bridge proper is removed. There is a fascinating such spot in Mt. Gilead, OH, left over from the T&OC, and another neat one in Kenton, on the Big Four. In Caledonia, between Marion and Galion, two big truss bridges stand side-by-side, one still active, the other trackless, on the former Erie/Big Four shared operation.

Do the stone pilings in the river at Harpers Ferry count? Plus, the current Shenandoah Sub bridge, then the mainline bridge, was burnt and rebuilt at least 3 times.

World-famous climatologist Stanley A. Changnon has published a book about railroad bridges of Illinois. I would guess that many of them are abandoned. He has another book coming out this spring (published by the American Meteorological Society) on "Weather and Railroads".
