Gettysburg WM Depot Reopened After Restoration
Author: aehouse

The 1858 Gettysburg depot, most recently used by the Western Maryland, was reopened this weekend for a local arts festival following a lengthy and multi-million dollar restoration. The restoration includes placement of a working replica of a lower quadrant order board signal.

The station is owned by the Gettysburg municipal government. The opening this weekend was for the arts festival only; a permanent use for the restored station is still being discussed.

That's great news, Art.

And a dandy photo, too.

Yes, and it was also used as a hospital during and after the battle-- as were eessentially every public and private building in town, plus most of the sorrounding farm houses and barns. There were more than 20,000 wounded soldiers left behind in a town of just 2,400 residents.

I haven't seen them out this year; the Gettysburg Northern has been using the Pioneer Lines-painted F units 401/402 on the excursion train.

Yes, in November 1863.

Regular passenger service continued into the early 1940s; the last regularly scheduled WM passenger trains on the Dutch line ran into Baltimore from Gettysburg in the morning and back in the evening.
