RS1 Rises From the Ashes
Author: RDG630

While in Quakertown, Pa today to photograph the EPRY 3153 in its new paint I was pleasantly surprised to see Alco RS1 #57 inservice. The unit has been idle for six years. The unit was built in 1948 for the Washington Terminal and then went to the BR&W and then NH&I before coming to the East Penn. While it is lettered for the East Penn it is privately owned. After these photos were taken in Quakertown it headed south to the CSX interchange in Telford.

Great shots. The early Alcos were considered honorary steam locos. With that exhaust it still looks that way.

Wow

How many RS-1 locomotives are left in revenue service?

Back when The 57 which incidentally is an ex Washington Terminal RR. Loco, used to belong to the Black River & Western RR. in NJ. I Traded the horn which it carries, a Nathan P-5 which I rebuilt for them for the Nathan M-5 it carried for a long time.

Glad to see 57 is back in service. I remember watching 57 pull freight through Rushland, PA for the New Hope & Ivyland when I was in high school in the early 70's. Thanks for the photos!

Green Mountain still uses the ex-Rutland 405 on their excursions, and last I knew, Arkansas & Missouri had one in excursion service, too.

Great to see the old unit running again. Looks like fill up the oil and check the fuel though....

Just a correction...it served the NH&I first then went to the BR&W....same time as the 4662 transferred from the NH&I to BR&W.
