Eastern Railroad Discussion > Harsimus Cove,NJ questionDate: 09/08/07 00:20 Harsimus Cove,NJ question Author: westernrails I've been looking a some Conrail and PRR books and was wondering. Is the former PRR Harsimus Cove yard still in existence?
Thanks. Date: 09/08/07 03:56 Re: Harsimus Cove,NJ question Author: CSXvet There's nothing left of the PRR (or Erie) trackage in the Harsimus Cove-Exchange Place-Pavonia Ave. area -- it's all been redeveloped with office buildings, condos, a big shopping mall, etc. The only relic of the onetime rail activity there is the big Harborside Warehouse complex, which has been rebuilt as an office complex. The HBLRT runs north-south through the area and has a stop named Harismus Cove.

The street bridges have been removed, but the 20 foot high, half block wide embankments are still in place for about five blocks.
If you go to google satellite, etc and plug in Sixth street, Jersey City NJ, you can see that the viaduct runs from about Monmouth Street east to Marin Boulevard. If you continue east and a little north, you can see the outline for the former Erie terminal, now extensively built over. The PATH station at Newport Pavonia is your landmark for the west end of the passenger terminal trackage. The freight yard continued north and west, you can see some of that alignment just south of the Holland Tunnel approach road. If you continue south, you'll see two U shaped buildings which are at the north end of Harsimus Cove, on an almost straight line from the viaduct's end. The Exchange Place PATH station marks the passenger terminal (south) end of the same Pennsy complex.
