Just caught the video on CNN. Railcars 'accordioned'. Report says it
involved cars carrying alcohol, butane, and glycerin. Authorities
allowing fire to burn down before approaching derailment.
Current eyewitness report from man traveling Hwy. 44:
'heard explosion . . saw cars dumping grain '

"Authorities tell her that there were hazardous materials being carried on the train, but it is unknown at this time whether the cars involved in the derailment were carrying those hazardous materials."

Gosh, it looks like something is burning hot, maybe something on the train???

Too bad they dumped the Canada Southern between Detroit and Buffalo. would be a good detour route.

No wrecks on Conrail?!? They put 'em on the ground as much as anyone in the '90's. I recall mainline wrecks at Huron, Fairlane, Elyria, and Willoughby, just off the top of my head.

You guys are absolutely 100% right. Conrail never wrecked any trains. NS never wrecks any trains. Only CSX does.

Chase, MD, never happened.

Graniteville, SC, never happened.

I have family that lives trackside just a few miles east of the derailment site in Painesville. My concern and interest was that this didn't happen in their backyard or that of anyone else, and that there were no injuries or fatalities. Thankfully it appears that nobody was hurt or killed, and nobody's homes or businesses were destroyed.

Let the investigators do their work now and determine a cause, be it CSX's fault or anyone else's.

Everyone wrecks trains, its a ugly fact of the industry.

It just seems that CSX has had more then there share in the past year.

If this were on a BNSF line, I would guess the symobl was W-HOCARE5-09.

Pilots were on hand to take on NKP between Erie and Elyra for both 48 and 49 of the 10th.

Passengers for Cleveland will be bussed to Erie and Elyra.

On TV it shows a lot of equipment burning and cars across tracks, so its a big one, that will take a while.

Conrail and NO WRECKS! Yeah, ok.
Here is a few I can think of:
Berea and a Mail train
Danbury(just west of the Sandusky bay bridge) 2 separate wrecks one being UDM and the other a freight train
Another freight train just east of the Sandusky bay bridge
Mentor
There is five that come to mind right away.

I also recall a damned serious wreck around Effingham, IL. IIRC, fatalities involved.

Well, if we're listing notorious Conrail wrecks, there was also the fatal rear-ender near Bryan, Ohio in early 1999 and the head-on at Thompsontown, Pa., in January 1988. I covered the Bryan one and remember Thompsontown because I heard about it from a Conrail crew in upstate New York.

As others have stated, Conrail had its share of wrecks.

Just in the period of the mid to late 90's, I can remember these CR wrecks firsthand ...

February '99 ... Piled up propane cars west of Albany, NY, with resulting explosion.

'97 ... Freight train rear ends light power at Hummelstown, PA, blocking Harrisburg Line. 1 Fatality.

Year unknown ... Light power rear ends and derails MAIL-8M at CP PHOENIX (Phoenixville, PA), no serious injuries.

Year uknown ... Selkirk, NY-Allentown, PA train derails 30+ car in South Plainfield, NJ due to broken wheel.

Year unknown ... Oak Island, NJ-Allentown, PA train strikes bridge with high car near Three Bridges, NJ, derailing at least 16 cars and destroying the bridge.

Year unknown ... Three train collision at Effingham, IL.

Year unknown ... Three train collision near Bryan, OH in dense fog.
