NS derailment near Butler IN
Author: toledopatch

NS #206 derailed at about 0600 this morning near Butler, Ind., either at or west of the diamond. Don't have any information about extent or injuries. Amtrak #29 and #49 are both showing Service Disruption, and reportedly may detour via Michigan. Freight detours also being set up. This will also affect CP's trackage-rights trains between Detroit and Chicago.

How bad? How many cars?

That TV report says there is propane leaking in the area, which tells me that it probably derailed at CP-360 and hit the switch heater propane tank, since it's unlikely NS #206 was hauling LPG cars.

Looks like they should have 1 main open before too long...

(and the pictures would seem to affirm Patch's comments)

Meanwhile, the head end of #206 is working in Toledo now, and reporting a lead engine of BNSF4975. So heads-up to folks in D&H country who may see this train in daylight tomorrow....

I can't confirm anything.
There have ,in the past, been detours
of Waterleval trains from Butler,down
the N.S. Huntington district to St.Joe,
Indiana,to Westbound on CSX.This move
required a NS pilot with Amtrak crew.
To New Haven and West via the former Ft. Wayne
Line, or the Nickle Plate also works.Mr. Patch can speak
to a Michigan reroute.

I'm charging my camera batteries in Fort Wayne.

Westbound Capitol shows a 6 hour delay east of CP342, it's just now moving again, lead unit 153. Unknown what the route west will be at Butler.

I've been told a Toledo-Peru pilot crew was ordered to board at Bryan, OH, and that #29 and #49 may have been combined there for the detour move. However, I'm also being told that eastbound mail trains are getting past the derailment site on the main line. Can't confirm either.

Just back from a boring lunch - that sounds likely. Toledo yard and Toledo East both made reference (separately) to things getting busy soon and 23K rolled up to 285 on track 1 while 15Q was (I think) putting their train back together in the siding at 285. The impression I got was that things are moving again and it was really going to pick up soon.

If one of two mains has been restored to service, I wonder if that means Amtrak will simply go through on the normal route.

Amtrak bused the passengers on both trains to their destinations. Equipment is to deadhead to Chicago, route(s) still to be determined.

Judging by the calls in Elkhart and Toledo, track is open, or will be open real soon. There is a pilot called in Ft Wayne at 105pm, not sure exactly what for.

Not sure about Amtrak yet but there is a WB stack train (8303 is the lead unit) making the turn at Butler to head south on the Wabash side currently.

On the former NKP to Fort Wayne right?

Well, if Fort Wayne ever gets Amtrak back, one of the two sets of trains should run down to Fort Wayne from Butler on the old Wabash and then west on the NKP to Chicago.

Forgot the old PRR--too much $$$ to get it back to track speed.

This is the regular route for 21T.
Was it 21T?

Not sure if it was the 21T or not. Figured the unit number may help.
