N&W 1218 Wallace Junction 1990
Author: Salida

Norfolk & Western 1218 is stopped at Wallace Junction Pennsylvania
outside Erie as she takes a fan trip onto Bessemer & Lake Erie rails
on a Buffalo to Albion round trip. At Albion, N&W's magnificant "A"
is turned on the well greased wye, complete with some wild slips.
I remember how the ground trembled as the 1218 crossed over onto the
Bessemer here at Wallace Junction.
The well dressed man with his back to the camera was a NS Special Agent
whose name I have long since forgotten.
The date, August 11, 1990.

If not for the mercury vapor light and the style of the mans suit that pic could have been taken in 1945!!!
Nice Job!!

Excellent shot. The way the wind is blowing the 1218's smoke, it makes it make like the 1218 is moving at a fast clip, which is startling before you read the caption since it makes it look like there is a guy hanging onto the baggage car door for dear life!

Not so much the suit as the merc-vapor light and signals down the line that make this "modern era."

And it kinda looks like the SA was taking a pic.

Very good shot, and practically in my backyard. - Jerry

Man look at the size of that train!!! Always a huge train behind the 1218 or the 611, and not until the last few years did they ever use a diesel(mostly on 611
where there were steep grades). I never saw 1218 down on knees more than once, and that was climbing the grade into Bluefield on a wet day!!! Pretty impressive engine.
Most of these long trains were childs play for the 1218!
