Eastern Railroad Discussion > Question (possibly stupid) re CSX "CE&D" SubDate: 01/05/11 19:45 Question (possibly stupid) re CSX "CE&D" Sub Author: atsf616 Yes, I have tried Google and TO.com searches, but still cannot find a definitive answer to what "CE&D" stands for. "Chicago, Evansville & Danville" seems to be a reasonable guess, but I can find no historical reference to any such corporate entity or prior railroad operating unit.

I believe your guess is correct as to the names, but I think you're looking in the wrong place for history. This was the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR at one time, a joint subsidiary of the L&N and the Mopac. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_and_Eastern_Illinois_Railroad Map: http://www.ceihs.org/historians_main_5.html BobE Date: 01/06/11 11:19 Re: Question (possibly stupid) re CSX "CE&D" Sub Author: atsf616 BobE Wrote:

I did find a few discussion threads on other websites going back to about 2004, and the consensus seems to be "no one really knows". "Chicago, Evansville & Danville" seems awkward, since railroad corporate or division names containing terminal cities usually flow in a logical geographic direction. The only major exception that comes to mind is "Nashville, Chattanooga & St Louis". Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/06/11 11:21 by atsf616. I certainly didn't have any luck finding a better explanation. |
