Whiteout at Elkhorn Tunnel
Author: varailfan

While shooting at the west end of Elkhorn Tunnel on Monday afternoon, a snow squall moved in and dropped several inches of snow in a matter of 15 minutes. I was setup to shoot the head end of NS 82J passing under the N&W signal bridge but it was snowing so much that the photo turned out literally just solid white. As the train was passing I moved to the other side of the signals and pulled off this shot of the pushers going by. Photo taken with a Canon 5D Mark II - 1/40, f/2.8, ISO 4000.

Good shot, I can feel the wet stuff. I think some of the best shots come in the really bad weather. I'm interested to see such good results at such a high ISO.

I appreciate all the kind remarks, thank you.

Bob - The Canon 5D Mark II does quite well at high ISO settings. In retrospect I should've bumped it up to 6400 ISO and increased my shutter speed to at least 1/60 or 1/80. However everything happened so fast that I was just extremely fortunate the shot turned out at all. The viewfinder was clogged with snow so I had to use the Live View feature to focus manually while hand holding the camera. Even the LCD screen was half covered with snow so I was really winging it on the focus and framing. We were huddled up against a relay box just trying to keep our wits about us during the whole ordeal. It's definitely an experience I'll never forget.
