Rare Visitor (CEFX 1007) to Western NC
Author: bnsf

Got a call from a fellow TO memeber today (jdtrainwatcher) that NS 135 had CEFX 1007 leading. While a leasing leader isn't super rare, a widecab CEFX leading is rare in these parts. I figured it was worth the chase up the Loops.

1st Shot: NS 135 leaving Old Fort, NC with CEFX 1007 leading.

2nd Shot: Rounding the Curve at Dendron

3rd Shot: Climbing Uphill at Andrew's Geyser

4th shot: At the top of Ridgecrest

5th Shot: Swannanoa, NC

Thanks for looking.

Alan. This section is from MP 111 in Old Fort to MP 130. The road mileage was a bit less

It was on a short term least to BNSF wayyy back then, now BNSF decided not to renew their leases and ended up into CP as their long term lease. Pretty soon, their leases are about to expire, as CP is getting more newer units on tap, (more ES and SD70ACe) rendering CEFX's surplus..

Oh man, I was just down there over Christmas. I like winter because you can actually see a little more without the foliage on the trees. Swannanoa.....I can taste that Okie Dokies BBQ now. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for these. Great to see.

Photo 2 shows 4 classic Southern Railway effects: The switchstand, the oval milepost, the wonderful "station" sign for Dendron with its white block lettering on the green background and the white border, and the excellent roadbed. All of them announce "Southern Railway."

NS has begun reinstating green station signs, but the white block lettering is more compressed, and the new signs lack the white border. The white border is a graphics "trick" that helps center the eye on what's inside the box. It's not just a nice graphic; it actually helps the eye focus on what's in the box. And it just looks nicer.

Don't forget that Southern whistle post - - o -.

Thanks, Tominde, the whistle post in Picture 5. Absolutely, no doubt what railroad that came from.

Those two steel white "boards" in the ground in Picture 4. What do those signify? I remember seeing them on the N&W years ago, and they came to ex-Southern property with the merger. I've seen them at the ends of bridges and culverts, so I've always assumed they're to mark the ends of bridges, but they're white on both sides, so I've never understood how they signify that. I'm sure someone on TO knows what their specific purpose is. I can't believe I haven't asked on here before now.
