The engine, a single Dash 40 #9355, was east of signal 141.4 when the tower operator reported that the last car was by the tower at MP 143. Therefore that train was more than 1.6 miles long, all empty auto-racks.

trains. MAIL 3 came off the hill one day asking for a helper on the rear. Its rearend was going in and out. When the operator at C tower asked what the problem was, the crew replied, "A five inch antenna doesn't do too much when the train is 3 miles long". Say what? These trains are 500-550 axles on the detector, 125 or more cars. And when each cars overall length is over 90 feet, you have 12000+ feet of train.

When the NS trains to and from Grand Rapids, 46E and 47E, are only 10-25 cars any more, a nice long one is like a breath of fresh air. isn't it, Greg?

ML 488 would just keep coming, rack after rack. Those were very impressive rack trains. Roadrat |
