GP40P and GP40-2P's
Author: IORY_GP40

I was just wondering, out of all the GP40P's and GP40-2P's ever built how many are left today and who owns the ones that do? Doesn't matter if they've been rebuilt inwardly into normal GP40's or 40-2's, just so long as they look like normal GP40P's on the outside.

Thanks,

Dave

The GP40P's were built for the Central of New Jersey for commuter service. The 13 units are now owned by NJ DOT. As for external configuration, I would suspect that the long hood "shape" remains, but the original steam boiler for train heat has been replaced by a gen-set for head end power.

The GP40-2P was even less popular as the SP was the only purchaser with a "fleet" of three units (for San Francisco comutter service) I would suspect that they are now part of the UP fleet.

Dave,The former CNJ GP-40P's still retain the 'SD-45' flared radiator look with the extension on the end of them.

The SP units are numbered 7600-7602, and are expected to be re# UP 1300, 1373-1374, if not retired before.

NJ Transit's ex CNJ GP-40P's were rebuilt by Junianta shops to GP-40-PH-2's along with a group of standard GP-40's of various heritages a number of years ago. Thier frames were extended to house the larger Caterpillar HEP sets. They still have flared radiators but the flaring now extends all the way to the end of the long hood. The long hoods are no longer flat at the end like pure GP-40P's and look just like the GP-40-PH-2's rebuilt from standard GP-40's(the 4200's) Here is a photo of NJ Transit 4112 which is one of the Former CNJ units as it appeared after rebuilding at Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 8/1994.

I have to disagree with the extended frame,I think you will find that the frame is the same as it was before rebuild and if I remember, the extention on the flares house the extra set of radiators for the HEP unit,I think they were trying to make it look uniform.Of course I'm open to correction but I believe the frames were long enough from the steam boilers to fit the genset.
