I was up on the "Pokey" in May for three days. At that time all 5 sets of pushers were beung used. Two of the pushers were Heritage units for Southern and Conrail were being used at that time. Brings back alot of memories for me, as my Dad went to work for Southern Railway in 1925 as a fireman, and was promoted to engineer in 1952. Was really nice to see the old Southern colors.

Anything with sufficient tonnage gets a push.

And that includes regular manifests. I've seen the auto parts trains (194/195 IIRC; those numbers are a few years old) getting pushed.

The only things using DPU are some of the power plant utility coal trains and maybe a few of the stack trains if length and tonnage warrants one.

I don't think any intermodals have gone to DPU on the Pokey but there may be a coal train or 2 that run that way out there. 233, 234 and 236 definitely don't run DPU. Most of the time it is manned helper sets according to tonnage and most size-able trains get a push.

The intermodal train with a DPU is 23G and 22A, they go via Bristol TN and have multilevels too. 23G usually passes the Roanoke cam mid-day, and is sometimes so short it makes you wonder why they use a DPU, but it may setoff cars at Roanoke. DPUs are used on the Belews Creek coal trains, often two per day, on the Winston-Salem district. Thay are added at South Roanoke. Trains usually 105 cars.
