Barron WI Sub Rebuild/Weyerhaeuser update 9-22-12
Author: ngfan

Received some photos today of the continuing work west of Ladysmith on the Barron Sub Rebuild preparing the line for fracking sand trains that will start in late Fall 2012. Erv Hagen of Appleton took these recently. Take a look at the progress.

Top photo: Cameron WI looking east towards Ladysmith.

Middle photo: Cameron WI looking west towards Barron.

Bottom photo: A Wisconsin farm along the line.

A few more scenes along the line.
Top photo: Fresh ballast and ROW brush clearing shown with a transition point from welded rail to jointed rail.
Middle photo: Rebuilt rail in front of the old Weyerhaeuser Depot. Hopefully CN will not raze this fine old building and some group will come forward to preserve it. :)
Bottom photo: Soo Line caboose on display near the old depot.

Final two pics are from Bruce Wisconsin, between Ladysmith and Weyerhaeuser. River Bridge 1/2 mile east of Bruce is to be replaced. Photos show equipment being staged for the operation.

Trains are scheduled to move across this line in late Fall. This is a work in progress. Thanks Erv for sharing your photos!

Does that sand come from the general area or is there going to be a big hole there?

Canadian National owns and will operate the line. It connects with their mainline at Ladysmith, WI.

The sand will come from various pits around the area, but their will be nothing big and deep like a typical open-cast coal or iron mine.

Adding this report and photo from a plat book of the yards that once existed at Weyerhaeuser when it was a division point on the mainline 100 years ago plus comments on the current rebuild from a friend in Rhinelander who recently visited the area plus two historic photos circa 1910:

We took a trip to the Western part of Wisconsin for an overnight and used Highway eight for a portion of the trip. I was impressed by the RJ Corman contractor that is doing the work. All of their trucks, backhoes and other equipment looks like they are fresh out of the box. Not only does all the equipment look new but the equipment looks clean.. CN must be paying a ton of money for this upgrade.

The rebuilt crossing were interesting. The crossings were upgraded to 132 pound rail. Then at most crossing they had to put in three compromise rail joints in short succession to reduce the rail weight from the 132 pound rail to the 85 pound rail that has not be replaced yet, so they could run their ballast and rail trains.

We stopped at the welcome center in Ladysmith. While inside checking out the railroad artifacts I discovered an old plat book and it had a portion of the Soo line yard in one of the maps. I have attached a photo of the map below. The map shows the western portion of the yard. To bad it does not show all of the yard to include the former roundhouse position.

Top photo: Plat book map showing west end of yard that once was at this location.
Middle photo: Historic view of engine house and coal tipple looking west in yard.
Bottom photo: Historic view of the depot looking east into the yard off in the distance.
