Norfolk Southern F-units
Author: SantaFeRuss

A few threads down inspired me to ask a couple of questions about the NS F-units.

(1) Have these F-units been rebuilt in-kind, i.e. rebuilt to F7 standards with 1500 hp EMD 567 prime movers,
or F7 or F9 units with 645 or 710 components and upgraded to 2000 hp per unit (F38-2 or -3)?

(2) Has Norfolk Southern ever used these units on freight? If so, anyone have photos?

Thanks for any info and photos.

Rebuilt by MARC in the 80s to what is essentially f38-2 standards. They have never been used to pull freight to my knowledge.

All four units now have EMD 645 engines and are rated at 1,800 horsepower.

While not applicable to the NS F units. The 710 assembly's will fit in the 645 block. They just need a spacer on top of the block to make up for the extra stroke.

MK rebuilt the two A units for MARC/MDOT. The two B units were not part of this effort.
