"Erie" unit headed for Sandusky, Ohio
Author: toledopatch

Just got a heads-up that the NS1068 (Erie) is leading a #698 train for Sandusky, coming up the ex-NYC out of Nitro, WV. That's a fairly slow route, with a helper district in southeast Ohio, and such trains sometimes sit at the crew-change in Hobson, OH, for extended periods. But it's something to keep an eye on.

Do you know when his call time is for and if he has departed yet?

Just for clarification, is this the WV Secondary? Also any updates would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes, the WV Secondary via Corning, New Lexington, Baltimore & Pickerington.

It was reported by Point Pleasant, WV, at about 0730. I don't know when (or if) the Hobson-Columbus crew was called.

Now reading elsewhere that the outbound crew at Hobson was ordered for 0845.

Moving north out of Hobson before 0930

That would mean Pickerington by?

I would think noon or so. I have a two hour drive to the Columbus area so it may be too late.

Thanks for an update or estimate.

Thanks, that's what I suspected. Unfortunately that rules it out for me as I can't spend the afternoon waiting for it to go north from Columbus and if I left right now I'm looking at about 13:30 into Pickering.

Thanks for the information.

Probably would have been OK with 1330 at Pickerington as it is not there yet.

By Bremen, OH about 1320.

I take it the trains off the T&OC run through downtown and get on the Sandusky District up at the Weber Connection?

Yes that is correct, Western Branch to LM Cabin (yes LM Cabin as it is now called that by NS as well) and then around the Baggerly Connection for the Weber.

Thanks for your help. Looks like another one for the "shoulda, woulda, coulda" column.

Just tough to start a two hour drive when you think you've missed the opportunity.

Next time, I hope.

Indeed, the West Virginia Secondary is not a very forgiving railroad when it comes to missed opportunities; if you show up too late for something, there's rarely much else to do but turn around and go home because there aren't very many trains on it.

Coal trains without sufficient power will pull across Bannon, shove into Watkins, then depart out the N&W side toward Sandusky. This was often done in the past when Watkins wasn't so busy. Now it seems to be avoided by either putting enough power on the trains, or shoving them up the hill. The new AC units have definitely helped on these moves.

One can assume he's still sitting in Columbus? Being as the crew is relatively new, is there a possibility of outlawing?
