UP's Southern Pacific Heritage #1996 visits the south
Author: djy23

Union Pacific's Southern Pacific Heritage SD70ACe lead NS 22Z (Los Angeles,CA - Atlanta,GA) this afternoon. I caught him between Anniston,AL & Austell,GA on the Birmingham East District a total of 11 times. 22Z was running behind a 24E the whole way and made the chase pretty easy. The weather on the other hand was totally overcast & cloudy which put somewhat of a damper on our photos but we made the best of it.
I will try to find out what #1996 goes out of Atlanta on and let everyone know. As we all have seen in the past, there is no telling what NS will send these units out on. MoPac went up Piedmont, to Jacksonville and even fell into an Atlanta - Lincoln,AL vehicle train pool for a week. Rio Grande went to Chattanooga & Memphis. #2001 & #2002 have gone Piedmont and straight back west on #225.
I want to thank TO members SP8595, UPNW2-1083 & KB5WK for confirming that #1996 was indeed leading. Also good to see you out there today Allan (GeorgiaRailfan31602).

Picture 8 - Temple,GA

Picture 9 - Douglasville,GA. It started raining very lightly at this point and was getting darker which is why I tried B&W.

Picture 10 - 22Z drops cars for the intermodal yard in Austell so yard power hooks onto the rear of the train and pulls whatever cars needed into Whitaker. The power & whatever cars are leftover then go to Inman.

Picture 11 - UP #1996 stopped in the tree tunnel in Austell,GA.

Glad "we could accomodate you". Now if you would be so kind as to ship the NS hereitage units to the left coast a couple at a time, we would be most appreciative! :)

Good to meet you as well. I ended my chase in Bremen, I waited on NS 703 on the intersecting line afterwards and he had NS 1062 and 8051 with coal loads. Great set of photos for the weather being like it was.
