How Many NS Locomotives Can You Fit in One Photo?
Author: aehouse

I believe there are 16 locomotives in this shot, taken from the "Iron Bridge" (Version 2), spanning the north end of Enola Yard near Harrisburg, Pa.

The lashup in the foreground included nine locomotives, all on line, that scanner chatter revealed was about to take a train west.

I assure you the 33A (train in the foreground) did NOT have all nine engines on line. Since the train was small only two engines were needed for power to maintain track speed.

And I assure you that I heard the engineer and dispatcher discussing the fact that all nine engines were on line and would remain so. There was even some jocular back and forth about the amount of smoke the older engines would put out when they went to make their pull.

Exchange:

Dispatcher: "Can you give me your engine numbers?"

Engineer: "They're nine of them!" (and he proceeded to enumerate each).

Dispatcher: "They're not all on line are they?"

Engineer: "Yup, all nine of them, and you can bet they'll be a lot of white smoke when we crank up the junkers."

Dispatcher: "You got that right."

Again, let me reiterate we only had the first two online, the whole thing that sparked that conversation which you misquoted was somebody else decided to put their two cents in saying "put em all on line!"

They couldn't be all online because it would be too many powered axles. Being that most of the local units were just being shuttled to Allentown normally the crew just uses the two road units for power and the rest just go along for the ride.
