NS 8730 D8-40-C - Built August 1992
sits outside of Norfolk Southern's
Bellevue diesel shops November 1992.

Its been some twenty years ago
they all have done very well.

Today 8730 is currently stored along
with many of its brothers.

I show the 8730 still running around in September of this year, has the NS stored it since? Also, I guess I have never noticed the odd 'anti climber' on the front and rear of this engine. Looks like you would have to step down in order to cross between motors...

Quite a few got stored in September. I was in Roanoke VA and saw several of this group parked by the shops.

8730 was put into storage during the first week of October.

NS opted to have a drop steps built into the anti-climber starting with #8714, IIRC. The height of the drop step above the rail matches teh walkway height of an EMD SD60. The earlier C40-8's did not have a drop step at all and it is about a 9-10" height difference.

Here's the last of that group, 8763, leading #206 out of Toledo one morning early this month. Most of them haven't been repainted since delivery and look terrible, but this one wears the Horsehead scheme well.

It still dosn't make much sense to me that NS is putting C40-8's into storage and at the same time is buying used SD40-2's.

SD40-2's are easlier & cheaper to maintain. And the lease on those C40-8's hasn't ran out yet.

It makes perfect sense when SD40-2's are more reliable and easier to maintain then the C40-8's are...
