Good afternoon in North Georgia
Author: djy23

Checked out what was going on along Norfolk Southerns Atlanta North District around the Aragon & Rockmart,GA area on Saturday, 12/01/12. NS sent us a BNSF Scherer coal train, NS #736, which would go into the hole at Aragon so the G50 helper could attach to the rear of the train and help it over Braswell Mountain.

Picture 1 - A pair of swooshes power NS #736 into Aragon,GA.

Picture 2 - NS C40-9W #8972 plays the role of manned helper G50 seen at Aragon,GA.

Picture 3 - A northbound intermodal train descending the Braswell Mountain grade just east of Rockmart. Nice wave from the conductor & a friendly toot from the engineer.

Picture 5 - DPU & manned helper shoving on #736

Picture 6 - Atlanta,GA - Nashville,TN road local L580 cruising over the Etowah River bridge in Emerson,GA.

Nice photos Kyle. Is the old Seaboard depot and the various out buildings still standing in Rockmart? I took some pictures around 1990 of that area after CSX abandoned the old Seaboard Birmningham line. There were lots of interesting structures along the branchline between the NS bridge and the old SBD main, even an old rusted boxcar advertising the Orange Blossom Special on one of the sidetracks.

The bridge over the Etowah in Emerson has always been a tough location for a great photo. Years ago I tried to incorporate the barn close to the Old Dixie Hwy in a photo with the trestle but the distance between the two did not create ideal images of the train.

I havent seen or at least noticed any old Seaboard relics but Im sure there are still some around if you look hard enough. Ive tried the same thing with the barn & bridge and got the same results as you. Just not possible I suppose.

I've actually shot this Scherer coal train before too in Atlanta back in September. Wish they'd put the MACs back on like they used to do. Every now & then BNSF will give us an Executive MAC.
