Eastern Railroad Discussion > Less than walking speedDate: 02/13/13 04:46 Less than walking speed Author: ddavies Being controlled by GPS markers (set up before the train dumps), a Herzog train can dump at 15 to 20 mph and skip switches and road crossings. This CSX set must be about the most recent short of GPS. The dumping is remotely controlled, but you have to walk beside the train to check the progress. This ballast train met an eastbound Herzog train just before it started to dump, so I guess CSX just doesn't have enough Herzog trains.

Richard Date: 02/13/13 06:12 Re: Less than walking speed Author: jmbreitigan Interesting photos. The guy with the remote control got his exercise for the day.
John Date: 02/13/13 11:04 Re: Less than walking speed Author: swampfox quite an improvement over the way we used to do it with a tie under the wheels to spread the rock........
Date: 02/13/13 12:50 Re: Less than walking speed Author: ddavies NS had to use a tie 3 years ago when they built the double track around VIP. Someone put a regular hopper in the middle of the ballast car set. Also had to use an air jumper hose to get the dump air to all the cars on the other side of the hopper.
Pictured is the car, and a close-up detail of the tie spreading the ballast. The white hose is the air jumper. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/13/13 13:02 by ddavies. Date: 02/13/13 13:11 Re: Less than walking speed Author: swampfox ddavies Wrote:

Big stuff later on top.
