Being controlled by GPS markers (set up before the train dumps), a Herzog train can dump at 15 to 20 mph and skip switches and road crossings. This CSX set must be about the most recent short of GPS. The dumping is remotely controlled, but you have to walk beside the train to check the progress. This ballast train met an eastbound Herzog train just before it started to dump, so I guess CSX just doesn't have enough Herzog trains.

quite an improvement over the way we used to do it with a tie under the wheels to spread the rock........

NS had to use a tie 3 years ago when they built the double track around VIP. Someone put a regular hopper in the middle of the ballast car set. Also had to use an air jumper hose to get the dump air to all the cars on the other side of the hopper.

thats what im talking about. everything but the come-along to hold the chute steady. some funny looking ballast, looks like a slurry

I think this is the base ballast on a brand new track. Big stuff later on top.
