Daily dose of DPU - Today's 65R in Toledo
Author: MDH

After the last two consecutive days featured 65R empty oil trains with heritage leaders and DPU's going through Toledo between 7:30-8:30 AM (making nose lit shots east of Elkhart impossible) today's 65R didn't show up until lunchtime. So of course it's raining & nasty here today. 65R with NS 8055 & 8106 on the point and 8016 on the tail re-crewed out at Vickers before continuing through town. Two eastbound manifests also went through (second was 16N - not sure what the first was but it had a lot of hot asphalt tank cars). Coming behind those two were a late running 20E and a 64W so the empty oil cans passed the loads somewhere on the west side of Toledo. Also of note - many of the 65R's cars were obviously former ethanol cars, some even carrying the "Global Ethanol" logo but 1267 placards (for Crude Oil) which reinforces the point that you can't tell ethanol from oil trains these days for sure unless you're looking at the placards (BTW - ethanol uses 1987). It hasn't been long since DPU's started on NS in Toledo and it still seems a little strange seeing them here.

Regards,
Michael

The 64W had NS 2576 leading, followed by three BNSF units, and no DPU.

No proof on this end that a 65R with 8055+8106 and DPU 8016 came to Reybold (Delaware City) this weekend. But it would be good to know where it DID come from. The last 64R we have had here is the one with 2540 leading, well covered by others here-in. but another post sez there is an EB oil train on BNSF at Dilworth, MN, which is the ex-NP's yard for Fargo, ND. About as Far as you can Go and still have some remnant of a connection to the East.

It's conceivable that today's train in Ohio had been parked somewhere for a while, even re-powered during that time after leaving Reybold with other engines. After all, several of these trains have had power change-outs at Conway of late; that also seems to be where DPUs have been added to several consists.
