Posted from iPhone Date: 06/25/13 11:25 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: pennsy3750 30 miles east from Altoona would get you roughly to Huntingdon. Lots of good photo spots between there and Altoona. Spruce Creek, Tyrone, and Tipton were three I used to frequent in college.
The territory east of Altoona has been discussed here multiple times; using the search function will get you plenty of details. Or you could just take some time and peruse Google Earth. Date: 06/25/13 11:26 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: toledopatch Lots of places, although between Tyrone and the west side of Huntingdon the tracks are a bit hard to follow.
Date: 06/25/13 12:26 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: Gonut1 Seldom see any photos from East of Altoona except Lewistown and eastward. Everyone flocks to the big hill and the West Slope.
Gonut Date: 06/25/13 12:43 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: TrackOne This is quite an interesting stretch of line. You will need to work around the abundant tree growth. I was able to capture the action while living in State College years ago. A few place come to mind:
Bellwood / overhead bridge Tyrone / curve by station Birmingham / stone bridges Union Furnace / road crossing Spruce Creek / Little Juniata River viaducts and tunnel Barrie / road crossing Petersburg / Highway bridge and Shauer Creek Huntingdon / old PRR station and Interlocking tower Huntingdon - Mt Union / pacing shots along PA RTE 22 Mt Union / Jacks Narrows Tom Biery Date: 06/25/13 13:02 Re: East of Altoona?? View 1 is the west portal Spruce Creek Tunnel, View 2 Road crossing Barrie. The third shot is from a hill side between Spruce Creek and Union Furnace. The old road follows the main line and Little Juniata and offers the photographer beautiful vistas. Photo dates to Spring 1970. tom Date: 06/25/13 13:25 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: dbrcnw Just to add another thought on Tyrone.
Looking west from the station area there is a good long open shot. Also you might catch the Nitany & Bald Eagle in Tyrone. Dale Date: 06/25/13 13:35 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: zchcsse I just visited that stretch yesterday. Early in the morning this time of year Tipton and Fostoria are quite good, and have position light signals as potential backdrops. Huntingdon has an old tower as well.
1) Signal bridge at Fostoria. 2) Eastbounder with the signal bridge at Tipton. 3) Eastbounder with Hunt Tower in Huntingdon. Date: 06/25/13 16:25 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: bigsavage parailfan.com
Date: 06/25/13 16:35 Re: East of Altoona?? Author: RuleG Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Line enters Tyrone from the West on a curvaceous alignment. One can get a nice view of eastbound trains in the vicinity of Tyrone's Amtrak stop.
