CSX rebuilt SD40s
Author: JWR123

Hey fellas, I have a question for ya. What time period did CSX start and end their rebuilding of SD40s to SD40-2 specs? Also what was the exact number series used? I know 8400s, what about 8300??

Best Regards,
JWR

I "lifted" this from a message board sometime back. Took awhile to find. I like good historical info like this for CSX units.

Hi %$#^.....,
Hope I can be of some help. Since 1987, I have tried to maintain a
history and roster of every unit on CSXT.
Some of these units began as SD45's and have been heavily rebuilt.
I don't think the VMV units ever ran in lease service for them.
They are shown as VMV numbers because they owned them at one time
with these numbers, probably for the only purpose of being rebuilt.
On all my slides I show these as SD40u's or SD45m's, because that
is what they really are; the SD40u's especially, because they are
in SD40 carbodys.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Here is what I have, exactly as it appears in my notebook:

Hey, thanks for the info!! Helps alot!! Although I was almost certain that CSX rebuilt some of their own former SD40s or were they just traded? I've seen a vew pics of various SD40s that mention that they were rebuilt into SD40-2s and even on the CSX Photo archives, some of the SD40s are listed in the 83/8400 series. Also another clue is that some of the rebuild SD40s have the chessie mailslot battery covers. Maybe those were just in time???? Am not really sure. Anyway, to make a long story short. I have always enjoyed seeing the rebuilt units on CSX.

Best Regards,
JWR

Yes, you are correct, CSX did rebuild some of their own SD40's. I think this work was done by Huntington and yes they were/are in the 8300 series.

Check out the 8300 series under the SD40-2 link at http://www.bullsheet.com/RosterMenu.html. This site gives some of the pre CSX SD40 numbers such as C&O 7501 etc....

The CSX SD40's ranged from 8300-8438. All weren't rebuilt, as a
bunch were traded to VMV or MK and in return, they got the 50
rebuilt ones from MK (with the histories listed in another reply)
Also a handful weren't rebuilt, but were renumbered in the 4600's
and used in yard service. A couple of these are still in predecessor
schemes (4600/4601 in SBD, 4617 in C&O blue). I think the program
started in 88 or 89 and ended around 91 or 92. I think the program
ended before they started using the current yellownose scheme, I
believe, as all the rebuilds were in the solid gray, or the blue/gray
with yellow ends/frame stripe (many have since been repainted in the
current scheme)

Couldn't find any solid info here on the net, but I think the MK rebuilds were 8440 and up.

As far a paint schemes, the initial units rebuilt by Huntington were painted in the gray ghost scheme. After the first few units were out CSX adopted the first yellow nose scheme for which the remainder of the Huntington rebuilds wore. By the time MK started their rebuilds the current paint scheme had been adopted and all of their units were painted as so.
