Date: 12/11/13 17:35 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: MDH Looks like not too bad of a derailment. Of note, it involves at least some newer cars (note the end shield on at least one) so I'm curious if the newer cars held up better... (sounds like no punctures/leaks so that's good!)
Michael Date: 12/11/13 17:45 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: CCMF Very low speed affair so it's sort of apples and oranges. Looks to be at about CP 434 "Harlem" on the tracks around the back of Frontier Yard right by the hump.
Bill Miller Galt, ON Date: 12/11/13 17:52 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: Out_Of_Service ya know this is spooky ... there was a front page article in the Daily News here in Philly about the concerns of a derailment of an oil train. CSX's reply was that the likelihood of an oil train derailment is very minimal

Wasn't trying to compare to *that* derailment or really any other one in particular - more to the point that it looks like they held up well in general. Michael Date: 12/11/13 17:55 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: farmer Broken rail sounds like the cause and now has opened another issue. How often do yard tracks need to be inspected that handle oil, ethanol and other hazardous material. FRA does not think once a month is enough.

Let's make some more rules to keep this exact same thing from ever happening again.

Gonut Date: 12/12/13 13:19 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: tp117 'missing switch frog'? That would be 8 to 15 feet depending on the frog number and style,....oos would know better. Of course its gonna derail!! A cracked or otherwise deformed frog seems more likely. I've always viewed 'derailment' as sort of a flat tire; a minor incident. Major derailments are 'wrecks' or sometimes...as we konw with crude oil now...catastrophies.
Date: 12/13/13 05:24 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: Gonut1 Maybe it was the missing points and not the frog?
Go Date: 12/13/13 05:34 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: Lackawanna484 Doesn't CSX have specific rules about operating KEY trains over sidings, etc? I've heard the Mohawk etc dispatchers agonize about having a KEY train in the mix when there's a track closure etc ahead
It would seem that somebody didn't follow all the rules in place if an oil train was on an infrequently inspected siding. Maybe the train wasn't coded properly, or the yardmaster just figured he'd put it somewhere for a minute, or the engineer accepted an order he should have challenged. Lots of things to consider when the inspection(s) happen. Date: 12/13/13 17:33 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: NYC6001 A blind man can see how risky it is to send a unit train on certain yard tracks. Just put in some ties and rock, and no more problem.
Date: 12/13/13 19:53 Re: oil train derails in buffalo Author: Gonut1 Maybe, just maybe there are a lot of folks just missing the missing point. Or the missing frog or ???
Jethro Tull said it well. "Thick as a Brick", or something like that. Go |
