How to map mileposts
Author: march_hare

Here's an oddball request for those of you familiar with GIS.

Our emergency response people are looking for somebody who has RR grade crossings and/or mileposts located in a GIS layer.

FRA's web site has it in a viewable map but the source data is unavailable. Anybody have ideas on where this info might be available?

The US DOT Crossing Database has all crossings (public crossings at least) which includes milepost and lat/long information for each crossing. You should be able to go to their web site and pull that information by location, railroad, DOT crossing number, and possibly railroad, subdivision, etc. You didn't indicate if you are looking for one town or a much larger area, but this sounds like the type of data you are looking for. Another source might be to go directly to the railroad.

Try the state agency responsible for grade crossings in your area. This could be the DOT or a utility commission. The FRA inventory is updated with information from the state agencies. With all of the recent efforts to update and modernize the FRA grade crossing inventory, I would be very surprised if someone does not have this information in a GIS layer.
