Eastern Railroad Discussion > Input from the North Carolina people on here...Date: 04/16/14 18:05 Input from the North Carolina people on here... Author: Benched_it This past Sunday morning I was on the way home from Darlington, SC.
I always swing by Hamlet out of habit and saw a green signal and figured it was Amtrak headed that way. As I was driving down highway 177 towards US1 and Aberdeen Amtrak did pass me headed toward Hamlet. This was about 12:15 AM Sunday morning ±. Thinking nothing about it I headed on up US1 north. Passing over the tracks north of Vass I looked to my right as usual and was shocked to see a green signal AND a southbound train sitting there. This was about 12:40 AM or so. I say shocked because this is the "S" line from Raleigh to Hamlet and all it sees in a 24 hour period are two freights, F741 and F742 I think are the symbols and a north and southbound Amtrak. I rode down there and there was a train and a signal maintainer working on the signal. All I could pick up on the scanner was the dispatcher telling the crew that 91 (Amtrak?) had just passed through there. The headlights on the train were blinding me and I couldn't tell what it was but I think it was a freight as Amtrak had just passed through. This was at milepost S 209.39 at the Pine Forest Road crossing (35.342067,-79.229493 actual location) My question after all the rambling is this. Was this train one of the two local freights? I didn't think they ran that late or at least I've never heard them as they pass the Colon crossing north of Sanford. I was trying not to get my hopes up that it could have actually been a 5th train that day? Any ideas or input? Thank you! Jay Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 04/16/14 18:31 by Benched_it. However if you're a Jeff Gordon fan like myself... not so much. *sigh* Jay Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/16/14 21:02 by Benched_it.
