NS 8098 (Conrail) off Illinois coal!
Author: historic66

NS 8098 is on 302 (Granite City to Decatur). It is still in Illinois but finally off the Hillsboro coal loop. 302 is south of Staunton at the moment.

It's been out there since at least February and yes, I'm glad to hear there's a possibility of escape, though I'll truly believe it when it gets to Ohio.

It was the second H-unit I shot, back in April 2012, but I still want a good shot of it at a recognizably CONRAIL location. In theory, that shouldn't have been hard, but it's one of only a handful of H-units that haven't been in the oil-service pool, and its one daytime appearance leading a hot Chicago Line intermodal train was not accompanied in Toledo by what I consider to be desirable weather.

I would venture to "guess" the 8098 will go on a 34N to get back to Conway for an inspection. She is destined for Decatur...

302 power very well could go out on 34N. When the 1071 (CNJ) finally got out of the IL coal loop it took 34N out of Decatur, so I suspect the CR might do the same.

Great news! I've only seen this one once on June 12 of 2012, buried in Enola yard trailing on an S62 coal train if I recall (I remember the date because it was my birthday).

I like your intuition Carl. Let's only hope it's leading, daylight, and sunny. Ha!

I've seen this unit only twice, both in 2013, and am CLEARLY not thrilled with these results.

1) trailing with PRR on NKP 765

2) Popping up out of nowhere on a very fast moving Eastbound (didn't even have time to step out of the car)

If its going for inspection, good chance its dead in tow and will trail back. Haven not seen a report stating such, but last time it got out of that coal job it went right back! Please let it roam nyc-chi on intermodals for a while!
