Some Recent Color On The NS Lurgan Line
Author: ns1000

Hi everyone.

On August 29, I had some spare time to do some train watching. Here are some of the highlights:

Pic 1: NS 212 going through Marion, PA at track speed with UP power.

Pic 2: More UP power on NS 211 south of Greencastle, PA.

Pic 3: NS 37Q leaving Vardo Yard in Hagerstown, MD with BNSF power.

Pic 7: A long NS 202 with four engines elephant style at Antietam.

Pic 8: NS 203 coming into Hagerstown, MD. This would be my last train of the day because I was expecting company soon at home.

Pic 9: NS 747 in Shippensburg, PA on August 9.

Nice series and great variety--really like the elephant style consist. With some much run through power and horsepower payback hours, it's great that we all get to see the different roads equipment.

Very nice photos of an interesting line. Q: how busy is the Greencastle IM facility? In photo #2, the load/unload area looks pretty quiet. If I'm reading the NS intermodal schedule site correctly, it looks like two through train pairs make pick-ups/drop-offs on Mondays through Saturdays: 201/202 service to/from Rossville, TN and 213/290 service to/from Birmingham and Dallas. It appears that IM traffic to/from other SE US destinations/origins like Atlanta/Jax/Miami/Norfolk are handled out of the Rutherford/Harrisburg terminals.

Nice, I don't believe I have seen four locomotives elephant style leading.

You are correct. The only thing that I can add is that the yard isn't that busy. They unload cuts of cars dropped off and they load empties to be picked up. Not the hussle/bussle of most intermodal facilities.
