Pan Am 206: MLs for P&W @ Gardner 091414
Author: JPB

At 8:30ish Sunday 09/14/14, Pan Am Southern 206, led by a Berkshire Hathaway RR Dash 9, arrives Gardner to set out Multi-Levels for interchange with P&W. Train is arriving on main track 1 and will use main track 2 for the drop. Looks like the plastic wrap on the lumber loads didn't survive the trip so well. Conductor will ride the rear end for almost a mile and then set lots of hand brakes given the set-out will be left on a grade that used to require helpers.

Providence & Worcester employee shows up to inspect the interchange cars prior to P&W's afternoon arrival of the Worcester-Gardner turn.

No-goodniks looking for Moose and Squirrel

Two hours later, the set-off is complete, 206 is re-attached to its Ayer ML block on Main 1, and the train is tied down by PAR (Parked Awaiting Recrew).

This is a crossover track panel that Pan Am maintenance crews fabricated at this site a few months ago. Rumor has it that it will either be used to provide either:

a.) A direct connection from PAS main track 2 to the P&W that would permit a train (eg, rumored ethanol unit train) to be interchanged without the need to travers the yard
b.) A crossover from main track 1 to main track 2 at the CPF-345 interlocking just east of the yard. Ultimately this crossover plus extension of the main track 2 for 2 miles east (CPF-345 currently transitions 2 tracks to single track east of Gardner) will permit PAS to park eb freights awaiting clearance into the MBTA commuter zone, which is being extended westward into Pan Am's current parking area on the double track between Westminster and Wachusetts.

It's not clear when this switch set will be installed as Pan Am's meager track maintenance crew is getting the Conn River line between Springfield and E Northfield spruced up for the end of year return of Amtrak's Vermonter.
