A Maine weekend - Part 1: Belfast & Moosehead Lake
Author: njmidland

I led a small group to Maine this weekend to charter a trip each day on an interesting operation. Saturday we chartered a photo freight on the Belfast & Moosehead Lake.

Photo 1: We started at City Point, 2 miles out from Belfast (sadly those two miles have been torn up to build a rail trail). GE 70 tonner #53 and caboose 31 were being readied (lube oil added to #53) for our trip.

Photo 2: At Waldo, we picked up an outfit car, 2 MEC boxcars and a single dome tanker.

Photo 3: Arrival at Brooks.

Photo 4: Ready to depart Brooks.
Photo 5: Approaching Thorndike.
Photo 6: View from the caboose.

Photo 7: At Unity. We were hoping to go all the way to Burnham Jct. but the state had apparently done some ditching work at one or more crossings west of Unity forcing us to turn around here.
Photo 8: Here is an interesting car. It has two sets of doors and we were told two separate temperature controlled compartments inside. It is ex-Boston & Maine. The B&ML folks referred to it as a cream car. It has steam lines so it could run in a passenger train.

Video - crossing Lower Wescott Bridge near MP 4.

I hope you enjoyed a quick look at this interesting Maine short line, sadly without freight traffic. Next up will be the WW&F.

The B&M car is one of their Milk Car fleet. They were used on many of the B&M branches on passenger trains to bring milk to market. they would pick milk cans at stations from local farmers and bring them to the city. Some had passenger car trucks so they could run at higher speeds.
