A CSX employee told me that the cantilever was to be donated to Thurmond and erected over the roadway across the bridge to support a new "Welcome to Thurmond" sign. Appears this is not the case though.

Wow, sad day! Progress marches on, indeed, but there is quite a bit of collateral damage in this particular case.

Thanks for sharing, glad I got there when I did!

1 - Two big AC's and 150 cars of coal rumble east through Thurmond, WV in the pouring rain on Tuesday April 15, 2014.

Well I had my chances but put it off to catch those C&O signals. He who hesitates is lost.

That bridge added so much character... The face of Thurmond has been changed forever, but time moves along...
Three of my favorite Thurmond signal bridge shots...

Just need to get a modal railroader to weather the new signal so it isn't so new looking. New stands out down there.

CSX sure moved quickly on that replacement, at least relative to some other signal projects that have drawn out for many months.

Learning about this saves me the trouble of driving down into Thurmond this Sunday if I head toward WV to shoot the New River train, that's for sure.

A big change indeed... How long where those signals there?

Thanks for that info, too. I was still considering going after the New River Train, just not at Thurmond. Now I probably won't bother at all.

You boys lamenting the signal bridge, I'm sure do not remember the run thru enginehouse that was also there.
