Montpellier Ohio? help
Author: bhphotography

What trains run through montepelier ohio. And when can you usually expect them? I'm leaving after I get off work to head out there I've only been once so far (and i loved it even though there wasn't much traffic ) and I wondered if NS even owned the line because of all the CP ha

So far I have these

NS 267 Detroit - ft wayne
NS 266 ft Wayne - detroit
NS 171 detroit - salem

IN montepelier turn when does this run and on what days?

CP run throughs no idea of NS symbols.

The trains I have most commonly seen in daylight through Montpelier include NS #289, 171, 264, and 196, and CP #240, 244, and 241. CP oil and ethanol trains also run this way. There's quite a bit more scheduled traffic that runs at night, especially this time of year when the nights are much longer than the days.

I'm not sure the IN runs at a predictable time, but would gladly be informed if that is now the case.

When I have railfanned in Montpelier, it has typically been because I knew traffic was coming. From there, it's about a 15-minute drive down to the much busier ex-NYC main line through Bryan.

I seem to think that IN likes to start many of their trains in the A.M. Perhaps a visit to the new 1.6 million dollar engine house east of Ashley at Hudson might be worth a visit for photos and answers. They are usually a friendly lot.

IN heads east out of Ashley in the AM. I dropped by their new facility back in Oct, but found it locked up tight.

They can outlaw trying to get onto the NS. This happened the first time I was there and I caught them heading west in the AM.

Second visit found them headed east in the morning, arriving at the connection around 2PM. The crew stopped the train west of the connection, tied the train down and took off in a waiting vehicle. Very short greeting with the crew, but they were very friendly.

Randy, I don't believe there is a diamond at Montpelier. Are you referring to the junction at Pergo?

Must be the connection. I didn't actually see the "diamond", was going by evidently errant info I had picked up. Will correct original post. Thanks.

Not a problem. Diamonds are NOT a railroad's best friend. <G> Today's railroads remove them if at all possible. There never was one anywhere near Montpelier. See my book...

CP trains used to have NS symbols but I don't think they do anymore. Just "CP 240" etc.

CP regulars at Montpelier, OH would be 240/242/244 east and 241/243/147 west. There are also plenty of 608/609 (oil loads/empties) and 640/641 (ethanol). Less frequent are 642/643/644 (ethanol).

Lately CP 142/143 have been making appearances as well but that is temporary.

I think that should be all, and I'm pretty sure NS only gives CP about 10 slots a day total (correct me if I am wrong).

Here's my shot of the train on 10-9-14 east of Edon,OH. It was nice to catch the GP30's back to back.

I think you are correct on all points, but a lot of the scheduled CP trains often run at night. I was not aware of the #142/#143 trains running this way again, I presume that was a Buffalo detour?

I think the closest diamond to Montpelier would have been Alvordton where CN crossed over. CP 142/143 did return this week as well as some east bound oil's with dpu's.

"CN" in this application being Cincinnati Northern, of course.

The Alvordton diamond has been gone a long time...
