Eastern Railroad Discussion > SD70 questionDate: 10/03/02 16:51 SD70 question Author: emorygrove Is the prime mover in an SD70 a two cycle or four cycle engine?
Date: 10/03/02 17:02 Re: SD70 question Author: GoneLoco 2 cycle.
Bill Date: 10/03/02 18:17 Re: SD70 question Author: cr3317 I day EMD goes to four-cycle (I know its happened) is the day I start only listening to SD80's and below...
CR Date: 10/03/02 21:34 Re: SD70 question Author: TopcoatSmith The engine is a V-16 710 (710 cubic inch displacement per cylinder, 16 cylinders in a "V" formation - 8 per side....) versus the H-Block in "real" SD-90MACs like UPee and CP have.
TCS Date: 10/04/02 07:43 Re: SD70 question Author: bl2 As I understand it they took the 645 prime mover and increased the stroke by one inch to create the 710.
Date: 10/05/02 07:37 Re: SD70 question Author: csxchris It's possible, if you were to stand a 645 power assemblie next to a 710, the 710 is a couple inches taller. I know, I've mistakenly grabbed 710 power assemblies a couple of times from the same rack holding 645's. They'll fit in a 645, but the head sticks out a couple inches - no good on a 645.

It'll go in, but the water jumper and P-tube won't bolt up, and if you bar the piston down it'll come partway out the bottom of the liner. Embarrassing and difficult to fix.
