NS Company Shot of 8098 and 1073 at Horseshoe Curve
Author: Gumcoach

NS just posted a photo to Facebook that corporate photographer Casey Thomason took of the Conrail-Penn Central combination at Horseshoe Curve that is truly one of the best railroad pictures I've ever seen.

Last I checked TO won't allow original posts to be links to other sites but I think you're allowed to post links in replies so here you go:

And yes - it's an awesome shot!

The Lewistown shot that Gumcoach linked to is pretty cool, too -- and of course Casey has his company ID with him to shoot from both locations.

To be honest as awesome as the one at Horseshoe, I actually like the one at Lewistown better. But that's just personal preference.

I agree. The station and signal heads add extra interest.

I agree. Lewistown is a more compact scene, allowing the lights to be used to better effect.

How would you like a job like Casey's. Your hobby and a property pass to do as you wish. Nice photo!!

I wonder if Casey gets doors opened on him when he takes pictures… Steve

I'd say they're OK. I've seen much better. Just my personal opinion. Still love a lot of the NS shots, I wouldn't say these rank though.

I also like the Horseshoe pic, but if he is not using flash, what is causing the glints off the rail on the far side of the curve??
It almost looks like the lead units are pulling a string of lights around the curve. Reflected light from his floods??

That's a combination "long exposure" with flash backup. Clearly he's using one or more of his Alien Bees to light up the opposite side of the curve. (Although "light up" is a bit of a reach in my opinion.) The "string of lights" is the scotchlight reflective patches on the frame of the autoracks. They'll reflect even the smallest amount of light very easily.

The long exposure is evident from the headlights being blown out on the engine. Obviously, they had the numberboards switched off for the photo.

If it's not obvious, he had the train stopped at least for a couple minutes in order to pull this off.

From my point of view, the HSC shot isn't really that impressive. That's one of those locales that really lends itself to daytime shooting. The Lewistown shot is also a fairly easy shot, I've done it numerous times at night from that same spot.

All BS aside it's still a nice photo, not the best one ever but still nice even if he does get certain privileges from the NS for convenience

thank-you for the reflective explanation for my string of lights. I completely forgot the scotch tape reflective patches.
