NS SD80MACs free to roam?
Author: SOU3921

Seems like over the past month some of the SD80MACs have been freed from captive PA service and roaming the system. I assume this is due to the arrival of the NS SD90MACs and shop forces being for familiar with ACs now. Anybody know anything offical?

No they are still assigned to South Fork Secondary and Trash Train Service, but due to the number of trains that are being held for power around the system...they are probably getting put on just about anything to get a train moving, which is why they may be roaming the system more then they normally would be.

We had one pass down the old Wabash on a triple crown last week.

I shot the 7204 on 223 Friday at Moberly, Missouri. 223 goes to Atlanta. It went to Kansas City leading 297 Thursday.

7203 was out this way earlier in the week. It pulled 255 to Kansas City and I think was trailing on 20T eastbound.

Don't worry, we still have plenty in Pennsylvania. 7210 and 7201 were on 11A this morning when it struck a vehicle at a crossing.

Do they sound any different from a standard SD-70, being they have 20 cylinders?

YES. Sorry, I'm an SD80MAC freak. Yes. Much deeper, the coolest prime mover sound out there now.

Over on youtube there's a video of a 20 cylinder 710 engine in a power generation application running from idle to wide open. While not in a locomotive its still the same engine.
